A recent study of 10 countries revealed that Belgium has the most expensive diesel prices in Europe — when the cost exceeded €1.11/lit (76p/lit), prime minister Guy Verhofstadt intervened to cut excise duty by 2.5%.

Belgian operators are now calling on their government to make another cut.

The government is not ruling out further reductions hut insists that nothing will happen ahead of the autumn when the holiday period is over.

A spokesman for the FTA says: "Here we have the Belgian government looking reality in the eyes and intervening when there are spiralling diesel costs.

"This contrasts with the UK government which has scrapped the Lorry Road User Charge system, which would have decoupled truck fuel duty from that of cars, while offering no replacement scheme.

The Belgian motoring organisation VAB has been studying European fuel prices for a number of years.

It says Belgium has never been one of the cheapest places to buy diesel and recently the situation has worsened. with Belgium topping a list of 10 countries for the most expensive fuel. In 2000 13elgian lorry drivers,angered by rising fuel prices, blocked major roads for several days.

This was in response to French hauliers and farming groups winning a 15% cut in fuel tax following blockades at oil refineries and storage depots, POLICE ARE HUNTING a hitand-run truck driver who collided with two cyclists in Sussex, leaving them seriously injured.

The incident happened at 4.10am on 13 August on the northbound carriageway of the A23, just north of the B2117 slip road to Sayers Common. One man suffered a broken arm, while the other man remains critical.

Police say that the truck is a white Scania; it will have marks and damage to the front nearside panel and the nearside of the cab.

Police also wish to speak to the driver of a Co-op truck that was seen in the area at the time as he may have been a witness.
