Reg Cole

• Among the new appointments by British Road Services Ltd in its reorganized structure (CM June 23) is that of Reg Cole, who steps up from executive director, Contracts, to group services controller. The responsibilities attached to this new post are very wide, in fact they include all functions except finance and engineering, with particular emphasis on marketing of general haulage and other BRSL activities, contracts and staff.

As the man responsible for the company's tremendous growth in the contract hire 'field during the past three years since he took control of this sphere, Mr Cole now has the personal problem of removing his natural bias towards contract hire and directing his energies towards the new job. He says he hopes his run of success in this field will continue with the new project. The Contracts division has developed into a substantial portion of BRSL's business and profitability and he believes that there is a huge potential market in this field.

With his 59th birthday tomorrow Reg Cole is in the position of looking back on a lifetime of transport and also looking towards retirement. He plans to make a return visit to the West Country shortly to pick his spot.

Mr Cole started his career with the stone quarries in Bristol as a cost clerk which, he says, gave him the best possible grounding in costing. At that time he "cubed" every piece of stone that went into the building of the BBC headquarters at Portland Place in London.

From there he worked his way up until nationalization came along when he became district traffic superintendent of BRS's southwestern division. Although very antinationalization at first he is now very pro. He says he can see all the advantages and is confident BRSL can offer as good a service as competitively as anybody. There is still a need, in his opinion, however, for the small operator and he's certain we shall never see the small men go completely out of business.

For relaxation, Reg resorts to that dread of all housewives, "slaving over a hot stove". He says he enjoys cooking and cooks all the household meals every weekend. It all started, he told me, when he got married and confessed to his wife that he was useless as a gardener — so they agreed to swop duties and this arrangement has lasted and his expertise has extended to preparing all the fancy trimmings too. "We set the table as though dining at the Ritz," he said.

Photography (with results ranging from excellent to catastrophic) and walking ("I bbject to all this driving") are two more of his relaxations. DL.
