Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• After being served with a number of prohibition notices, Ready Mixed Concrete (Northern) Ltd, of Langley Moor, Durham, a subsidiary of Ready Mixed Concrete J.JK) Ltd. had completely redesigned its inspection and maintenance system. This was said by Mr J. Reid, for Ready Mixed, when the company appeared before the Northern LA in Durham last week under Section 69.

Mr Reid said the company maintained some 68 vehicles, including tippers• and truck mixers, in the Durham area alone and from another three maintenance centres there were over 150 vehicles, many of which were in the possession of owner-drivers but nevertheless maintained by the company.

Mr E. Gregory, the firm's transport

manager, admitted that nine GV9s had been issued since June 1970 on vehicles which had been in operation in the Durham, Teesside, Tyneside and Cumberland areas. A staff of mechanics was employed and as a result of the GV9s it was decided to have one fitter on the full time inspection of vehicles.

The Durham staff had been increased and new garage premises at Teesside had cost the company £40,000.

The LA, Mr J. A. T. Hanlon, said he was satisfied that the company now appreciated fully the position and had taken the necessary steps to see that there would•be no such occurrences in the future. He decided to take no action.
