• Government vehicle examiners are to investigate the condition of commercial vehicles arriving in this country from the Republic of Ireland.

This promise was made in the Commons after an MP had complained about the state of vehicles brought over by "itinerant tinkers or gipsies".

The vehicles, "of commercial types". usually landed at Preston and had come through Larne from the Republic, said Mr Robert Redmond (Con., Bolton West).

They were simply not fit to be on the road and were a menace to the drivers and to the public as a whole, said Mr Redmond. Commercial vehicle operators in this country would be jumped on from a great height if their vehicles did not undergo the Ministry test regularly, added Mr Redmond.

Mr Eldon Griffiths, Under Secretary DoE, pointed out that the Road Traffic (Foreign Vehicles) Act, which gave enforcement officers the necessary powers to carry out checks on vehicles such as those mentioned by Mr Redmond, had been in force only a week.

However, he noted what Mr Redmond had said. and would ask his Department's examiners to look into the problem he had mentioned.
