UERSATILITY is the characteristic of the Freightloader handling system and, although directed specially at municipal needs, it has a wide range of industrial applications. The unit (above) is a product of Shelvoke and Drewry Ltd., Letchworth, Herts.
The mechanism, which can be mounted on a wide selection of proprietary chassis, has a rigid main frame with hydraulically controlled arms to handle containers, pallets or tanks.
Stabilizer legs, which are self-levelling, compensate for uneven or sloping surfaces. An important aim of the design has been to impose only a balanced weight distribution on the vehicle when in transit. Only one man is required to carry out lifting and transporting.
By fitting auxiliary arms and an extra ram to operate a ramp, derelict or damaged cars, even if without wheels, can be carried. Standard containers available include 8-ton skips, 4 cu.yd. box types, pallets with remov able side rails, and 800-gal tanks. An oilengined compressor/exhauster unit can be mounted on the vehicle so the tank can be exhausted for emptying cess or sludge pits and pressurized for discharge of the contents.
A twin-compartment tank is available for use where washing-down facilities are required, this being particularly useful for the servicing of toilets where mains water and drainage are not installed.

VOLKSWAGEN this week announced prices of its new commercial range (CM, last week). They are:— Van, door one side, £720; doors both sides, £750. Pick-up truck, £720. Double cabin pick-up, £820. Kombi (double-purpose van and Microbus), £991 4s (£186 4s PT). Clipper, £1,064 19s (£199 19s PT); with sunroof, £1,126 8s 2d (£211 8s 2d PT); de-luxe with sunroof £1,249 6s 6d (£234 6s 6d PT). Prices for the motorized caravans based on these vehicles will be announced later.
