THE holiday ' lull " continues this week only a few Licensing Authorities are holding inquiries-and applications, especially for new licences, from all areas are again down in number,

There are still many contract ,A and C licence switches to the more remunerative kind of licences. One of the most substantial of these appears in the North Western publication, where Grindrod and Son, Ltd., who describe themselves in their application form as builders' merchants, want to utilize five of their Clicensed vehicles to carry other people's building and road-making materials, plant and excavated materials, etc., within a radius of 40 miles of Littleborough under a B licence. The vehicles are all tippers and total 20 tons unladen weight, In this same area, Leyland haulier A. G. Caunce wants to add to his A licence a vehicle now on contract. The normal user is mainly an agricultural one, but the radius is fairly large.

In the Northern division of the Scottish area, A. Slater's Haulage (Scotland), Ltd., want to surrender two contract vehicles and place them under a new A licence

authorizing them to carry fertilizers, etc., for Fisons. Ltd. In the same issue of A's and UN, this company ask to vary no less than five 13 licences.

An application in the Southern area of Scotland will probably receive attention from Pickfords. Thomas Kelly, of Barrbead, is asking the Authority for a vehicle to carry, amongst other things. "removals within Great Britain."

South Wales hauliers who operate vehicles to London will no doubt want to know more about the application by E. Boyle and Sons, Penarth. to vary an A licence by the addition of two trucks now operating under contract licence. Since the Court of Appeal's decision in the Arnold and Merchandise cases, the question of return loading has assumed some importance.

To carry air freight to and from London Airport and from diversionary airports. Roy Bowles Transport, Ltd., of Southall, Middx, ask for a substantial addition to a B licence they already hold. The vehicles, personnel carriers, trucks and vans. are also required to carry fruit and vegetables from London markets within 100 miles of London.
