Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

S.M.M.T. and I.R.T.E.

REFERENCE to the proposed Institute of Road Transport Engineers is made in the Monthly Progress Report ot the S.M.M.T. for July-August.

It is stated that the views of the members were discussed, and it was resolved that, whilst the vehicle manufacturers would be ready to co-operate with the Institute, they could see no necessity for them to become members of it, and, therefore, considered that manufacturers should refrain from such membership.

Whilst appreciating this offer of co-operation, we would point out that it has never been the intention of the Institute to embody manufacturers, as such, in the membership of the I.R.T.E. As has been made clear on many occasions, membership of the Institute will be confined to individuals. There is the proviso, however, that where applicants are not road-transport engineers, as defined the draft memorandum (that is to say, persons whose occupation or calling is not mainly concerned with the maintenance and care of motor vehicles), but, at the same time, realize that they will benefit by attending meetings and exchanging views with other members, they will be admitted as affiliates at a somewhat higher annual subscription.

Such affiliates will not be entitled to consider themselves as representatives of any particular concerns, or express views as such. Notwithstanding this, there will, of course, be no objection to their fees being met by any interests with which they are associated.
