A Vehicle of Attractive Design Recently Delivered for Service in Hilly Districts.

AMONGST the various types of passenger vehicle which have recently been completed in the works of Dennis Bros., Ltd., at Guildford, is the attractive 30-seater saloon bus shown in the accompanying illustration. It has been manufactured to the order of the Griffin Motor Co., and is for use in the districts in and around Brynmawr. The hills n this part of Wales are notoriously severe, and it is, therefore, of particular interest to note that the usual 30 h.p. engine normally fitted in the type of chassis used is considered sufficiently powerful to cope with the gradients likely to be encountered, albeit a 40 h.p. unit could have been incorporated in the chassis had the added power been deemed essential by the users.

The low weight of the chassis was the decisive factor in this matter. The chassis is of the company's standard model with a 15-ft. wheelbase, in which a frame of exceptionally deep section has enabled the strength to be maintained with a considerable reduction in weight. Moreover, the provision of a body of light but strong construction keeps the weight of the complete vehicle to 3 tons 18 cwt.

The passenger entrance is at the rear on the near side, and a separate door is provided for the driver on the off side. The driver's compartment extends only half-way across the width of the body, thus allowing two passengers to be accommodated in the remaining space at this part. The main seating is carried out on conventional lines, and the Seats are designed so as to give the utmost comfort to the occupants. spring steel supports being used for the backs. Four windows on the near side and five on the off side are made to be lowered and arrangements are made so that they can be regulated in any desired position. The exterior of the bus is finished in a brilliant shade of blue and the name under which the company's services are run stands out in bold relief on the side panels, the lettering being carried. out in gold and shaded black. The fitting of disc wheels equipped with pneumatic tyres follows the trend of modern development on passenger vehicles of this class. The tyres used are Dunlops of 36-in. by 6-in, dimensions, singles being fitted on the front wheels and twins on those at the rear, whilst a spare is carried in a cradle located below the frame, where it is readily accessible.
