The largest seizure ever of smuggled cigarettes at Poole Ferryport in Dorset took place last week, when Customs swooped on a Portugueseregistered artic.

More than 2.5 million cigarettes were confiscated on 9 April as the truck arrived at the part from Cherbourg with documents claiming it was carrying frozen fish.

A search of the refriger ated trailer revealed 2,559,000 Sovereign brand cigarettes hidden under boxes of frozen pilchards and

sardines; the duty evaded amounts to £398,368.

Two Portuguese drivers were arrested and later released on ball pending further enquiries. They have been remanded to report back to Customs In June.

This is the ftfth major seizure of contraband at Poole Ferryport in the past six weeks.
