• Using a new toil road in Cork would be seven times more expensive than crossing the Severn Bridge, according to hauliers. Cork-based Rory McAteer says the Severn bridge linking England and Wales costs about €20 (212.50) return and saves up to two hours.
The Fermoy town bypass on the Cork-Dublin road would cost €4.44 (£2.80); McAteer says: it's an astronomical fee. Four and a half minutes will cost €4.44." Local hauliers say they could make as many as ten return runs on the route each day, which would incur tolls at
almost €90 (255) per day per truck. Ireland's National Roads Authority claims that by 2020, more than 11,000 trucks a day will be using the road.
However, residents opposed to tolling predict that some 40% of passing traffic will simply travel through the toll-free town.
