• Dozens of asylum seekers are on the run after they smuggled themselves into the UK on a freight train through the Channel Tunnel last week.
The incident came just days after the French rail operator SNCF agreed to restart its troubled rail freight service with a promise that it would tighten security at its Frethun terminal.
As the train arrived at the English Welsh & Scottish EWS) railway yard at Dollands Moor, Folkestone up to 100 immigrants burst from the wagon.
"The UK government is overseeing the systematic collapse of the international rail-freight business, as a direct result of the actions of the French government," says Philip Mengel, chief executive of EWS, "After five months of disruption and empty promises by the French government a significant trading corridor between Britain and Europe is on the verge of closure.
"The solution to the crisis is simple. The French Authorities must provide the proper level of security required to operate services 24 hours a day" he insists.
David Brady, operational head of the British Transport Police in Kent, adds that his officers are being called to Dollands Moor to deal with stowaways on a daily basis.
