Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ALL those present at the Annual Ladies Festival of the North London Sub-area, R.H.A., held at the Hendon Hall Hotel last Monday. voted this to be one of the most enjoyable functions that they had attended. The brevity of the speeches was particularly appreciated.

The toast of the Association was proposed by Mr. J. H. Haynes, who referred to the great work it had carried out against nationalization. The song, "Britons Never, Never Shall Be Slaves" was not the Government plan for hauliers.

Mr. Frank F. Fowler raised an early laugh by saying this was a Ladies' Festival, but only men were talking. The R.H.A. had put up a tremendous fight

in the past year. He referred to a speech by Mr. Churchill, in which he said that this country was built on tradition, justice, and liberty. Liberty seems to be going, but when the working man realizes his liberty is lost we may get it back.

Mr. W. Marshall gave the toast of the guests, the response being made by the Editor of "The Commercial Motor." The latter recalled the luncheon to hauliers which he gave in April, 1930.

This was virtually the foundation of the Association.. .He also recalled another held in London in March, 1935, when he Was the guest of the RILA. Council and at which he was invited to tell the story of the original meeting.

The toast of the chairman was given by Mr. E. S. Kirtland, who congratulated the sub-area on having in him such a Iive personality. .

The chairman, Mr. R. J. Elmes, replied, and then made a presentation of a silver tea service to the past-chairman, Mr. F. E. Partington.

MACBRAYNE TAKES OVER CERVICES in the West Highland NJ islands of Benbecula and South Uist, formerly operated by Mr. Angus MacKinnon, have been taken over by David MacBrayne; Ltd. Besides continuing the present passenger services, the MaeBrayne .concern is operating new services linking with the British European Airways arrivals and departures at Benbecula Airport.

M.P.T.A. CONFERENCE I T is announced that the Municipal Passenger Transport Association Conference will be held at Southendon-Sea from June 17-20. Headquarters will be the Palace Hotel. ROAD TRANSPORT BRINGING HOME THE COAL

ROAD transport can be expected, to play .a very full part in coal transport for a long time. The sitoation has eased with weather improvement, and the military are not being employed, but can be called upon if needed. Open-cast dumps in the Midlands Division have been cleared. The R.H.A. emergency scheme is working well, but not quite so many lorries are now required. However, with the summer stocking of industrial establishments, etc., there may be a considerably enlarged call.
