Big Train off to a flying start

BIG TRAIN, the major new Driver CPC training initiative from the publishers of CM, got off to a flyer last weekend, when 70 truck drivers completed their first seven hours towards the new legislation. The event, staged in association with contract hire and fleet management specialist Fraikin, attracted drivers from all over the UK.

There were four courses on offer throughout the day — health, road and environmental safety; vehicle safety, control systems and fuel efficiency: LGV-specific regulations, loading and best practice; and rules and regulations governing the road transport industry — with all courses fully subscribed.

Delegates were also treated to a slap-up threecourse lunch and a good supply of tea and coffee at the Warwick University venue,

"Big Train is a major training initiative aimed at raising the standards of driver training across the UK," CM publisher Andy Salter told delegates. "Truck driving is a professional industry with a lot of extremely professional individuals involved. It's time we all started to recognise that, and behave appropriately, if we're going to attract the essential new blood into the business."

• Drivers should not to fall for a Driver CPC exemption scam, says Mick Jackson, chief executive of Skills for Logistics. This scam hit the web minutes after the new rules came into force," he told Big Train delegates. "It's rubbish. There is no exemption certificate available."
