Vehicle:

The Renault Trafic was launched in 2001 with L9 and 25-litre diesel engines, and a 2.0-litre petrol example with 1,023kg-1,212kg payload.

Engine:

Cam belt on diesel engine: check the paperwork to see if it has been changed. Limits are five years and/or 72,000 miles, otherwise it can lead to engine failure —1270 discount.

Warning lights: check that engine management lights for ABS, engine and stop light, come on with ignition and go out after you start the vehicle up. If the lights don't come on, they could have burnt out or be hiding a bigger problem. If the lights stay on, it could be the wiring loom, control unit (ECU) or (camshaft) sensor. Have a diagnostic check done.

Injectors: check the engine starts from cold and warm. If it has starting problems, the engine could cut out during the test drive. If it doesn't start from cold, the problem could be the glow plugs; an intermittent starting problem and cutting out points to the fuel pump. Poor starting suggests worn injectors. Have it fully inspected.

Turbo: let the engine warm up and then use the rear-view mirrors to check for smoke when accelerating. Also, listen for a whining noise. The smoke suggests turbo wear. Seek a £600 discount. Alternator: with more than 80.000 miles on the clock, check it has been changed. Ageing alternators can break up and cause more damage. Budget £350.

Gears: make sure the gears are relatively smooth and easy to use, and there is no crunching. Listen for whining or chattering noise and look for any oil leaks at the back of engine — these are all signs the gearbox is on the way out. Negotiate a £1,000 discount.

Steering: lock-to-lock should be light and easy. Check engine bay for red oil; get it inspected. Brakes: check the date of the last change, making sure any change is annual. Inspect pads for wear. Budget £200.

Chassis:

Lower control arm bushes: drive over speed bumps and listen for a knocking noise coming from the front suspension. Knocking suggests a lower control arm hush needs replacing. £125 discount.
