• About 100,000 leaflets promoting road safety will be distributed in a new campaign by the National Cycling Forum in a bid to reduce the number of collisions between lorries and cyclists. These collisions claim around seven lives a year, according to the NCI?.
Cycling accidents as a whole result in about 550 injuries every year, claiming the lives of around 35 people and leaving 130 seriously injured. Although HGVs are involved in only 2.5". of cycling casualties, they account for more than 20'),of the fatalities.
The forum's leaflet is designed to encourage drivers and cyclists to appreciate each other's perspectives. "Many of the accidents happen at or near junctions in builtup areas," says Kevin Clinton, a spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. "Problems could be avoided if cyclists and lorry drivers gave each other more room on the road."
