It maybe that for the sake of the environment we need to look at other ways of transporting goods to road, but it doesn't look like rail has much chance given the funding problems quoted by the Piggyback Consortium (CM 3-9 Sept).
Maybe surviving hauliers will be pleased to lose the competition, hut in the meantime I just don't understand the Government's attitude.
It seems happy to prevent hauliers from operating competitively at 44 tonnes in order to boost rail's chances, but unwilling to
back rail with real funds where it counts.
So why are hauliers still being victimised with this ludicrous 41-tonne compromise? And when will we finally get to hear about the \TED rates that will apply? Harry Mitcham, Altrinchain, Cheshire
