Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

T1-1 E Aldershot and District Traction I Co., Ltd., are " more than satisfied" with 15 new lightweight 30-seat one-man-operated vehicles recently put into operation, Mr. T. Robert Williams, chairman, stated in his annual report on Monday.

The vehicles were mainly intended to operate rural services as economi

cally as possible. They were economical and comfortable, and the staff had co-operated in making them a success.

During the current year, the company would be receiving 25 underfloorengined vehicles with dual-purpose bodies. The intention was that they would be used not only on express services and excursions, but on private hire.

Some 32 new double-deckers had been put into service, and new bodies

built on six other chassis. Doubledeckers now covered 53 per cent, of company's mileage, whereas in the past the percentage was nearer 33.

There was grave concern over unremunerative services. Forty-nine per cent. of the company's routes, involving 36 per cent. of the total mileage, was run below cost. The solution lay ouly in a reduction of the fuel tax. As much as 13 per cent, of revenue was paid away in this direction, Road Fund duties and rates.

Although there was an overwhelming case for applying for a rise in fares, it

was doubtful whether this would bring in more revenue. The alternative was drastically to cut non-paying services, said Mr. Williams. If this had to be done, the responsibility would rest on the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Already mileage had been reduced by lm. a year.

As a result of the British withdrawal from Egypt many troops might be brought home and if some were quartered in the Aldershot area, the company should benefit, commented Mr. Williams.
