New Six-wheeler with 184 b.h.p. Engine Designed for Gross Weight of 30 Tons .and to Operate at 5,500A

ANEW heavy-duty six-wheeled tractor, specifically designed for overseas use, has been added to the range of E.R.F., Ltd., Sandbach. It is the 66R and is powered by a RoilsRoyce C.6NFR six-cylindered oil engine and is suitable for a gross laden weight of 30 tons. The tractor is an entirely new vehicle and a large initial order has already been received from South Africa, where it will be working in altitudes ranging from sea level to 5,500 ft.

The chassis frame is an extremely rigid assembly, all members being pressed from I-in.-thick steel plate. The side members, which are reduced in section below the cab, have a maximum depth of 10f in., with a constant flange width of 3f in.

There are four cross-members, and the two adjacent to the rear bogie consist of double channel-section members arranged back • to back

approximately 6 in_ apart, All crossmembers are heavily flitched to the frame longitudinals and fitted bolts are

used throughout. The overall frame length is 19 ft.

Five-point mounting is employed for the engine and gearbox unit. Two E.R.F. swinging links support the• front end of the cylinder block from frame brackets and at the rear .of the engine there are two Metadone units on each side of the clutch housing. The rear of the gearbox is supported by a single Metalastik sandwich unit in compression.

The Rolls-Royce engine is normally aspirated and has a cubic capacity of 12.2 litres. It has a power output of 184 b.h.p. at 2.100 r.p.m. and develops 505 lb.-ft. torque at 1.200 r.p.m.

Twin cylinder heads carry overhead, Fit) push-rod-operated valves and C.A.V, injector nozzles, A twin-cylindered air compressor is driven from the front of the engine in tandem with the fuelinjection pump.

An 18-in.-diameter single-dry-plate clutch is employed and is mechanically withdrawn. On future models the makers hope to be able to provide hydraulic operation from the clutch pedal.

The five-speed gearbox is a new design with an overdrive-top gear ratio of 0.744 to 1, and a low gear of 6.54 to 1, The selector mechanism is mounted on the top face of the b< and is operated by a left-hand lever.

The 45-gallon fuel tank is cull( between the front and centre axles the near side of the frame. Tv Micronic fuel filters are incorporab between the tank and the lift pump at there are three C.A.V. paper-eleme filters between the lift pump and ti injection pump, As a further measu of safeguard against dust-laden atm spheric conditions, two large oil-ba air cleaners, with centrifugal pre-filte are provided for the engine air intat Hardy Spicer needle-roller joints a used on both transmission shafts. T centre and rear axles have overhe. worm drives, with further reducti, gearing in the hubs, giving an over; ratio of 8.64 to 1.

Full articulation is provided by t suspension, this consisting of invert semi-elliptic springs which are pivot t the frame at their centres and unnion-mounted to the axle cases at eir ends. Torque stresses are absorbed dual rubber-bushed arms.

The front axle has semi-elliptic tring suspension. Steering is by fades cam-and-double-roller gear with ratio of 28.5 to I.

Westinghouse air brakes are fitted, ith piston units at each wheel. The ont cylinders, which are attached to e brake back plates, are 5 in. in diaeter. The rear units are of 6-in. diaeter, mounted on the axles, with rod ikage to the brake cams.

All drums are 16* in. in diameter, td the facing widths are 4 in. at the oat and 6 in. at the rear. The hand ake is linked mechanically to both ar axles and is of the multi-pull type th controlled release.

Cast top and bottom tanks are used the radiator assembly and the fan, driven by twin V-belts, revolves in a close-fitting cowl to provide maximum cooling, The 24-v. dynamo shares the fan drive, which is taken from a pulley on the front end of the crankshaft. Twin tyres are fitted to the rear wheels, the tyre size being 11.00-20 in. al? round.

The 66R has a wheelbase of 10 ft. 9/ in. and an overall width of 7 ft. 10iin. When fitted with 11.00-20-in. tyres, the minimum ground clearance is 10 in.
