• The Government looks set to cut the road spending budget by 20%, more than £200m, as pressure mounts on the Chancellor to make money available For tax cuts in November's Budget.
The cut will force the Department of Transport to scrap a further two "vital" road schemes—the A40 between Hanger Lane and East Acton and the extension of the Mll into central London. It will reduce the number of major projects next year to just two out of an original seven.
The British Road Federation criticised the move as short term.
Pro[ects to go ahead include the Newbury bypass and improvements to the Al 3 between London and Tilbury.
