Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DAF is developing a version of the unique Variomatic infinitely variable transmission system for trucks, the company confirmed to CM this week. Variomatic—using rubber belts—has been a feature of all DAF cars.

A DAF spokesman in Britain explained that Van Doorne Transmissive BV was developing a new truck transmission— known as Transmatic—using a single steel-band instead of the rubber belts. Such a transmission had been under test in a medium weight truck and it was hoped to put the Transmatic in production by 1978.

The test truck—a 1400 series —has a 5.75-litre engine and operates at up to 20 tonnes gcw.
