A 20-cwt. Pedestrian-controlled Unit with Chain Drive to Rear Axle : New 30-cwt. Machine Completes Morrison-Electricar Range

TWO w Morrison Electricar battery-electric vehicles will be shown. by Austin Crompton Parkinson Electric Vehicles, Ltd., at the Dairy Show, to be held at Olympia, London, from October 21-24.

One will be a pedestrian-controlled unit and the other a 30-cwt. machine with enclosed driver's cab. The former, which is to be known as the P.90, has a payload capacity of 20 cwt., or 90 gallons of crated milk. It is a fourwheeler employing an Austin standard car axle, and Austin wheels equipped with 13 by 5.20-in. tyres.

The traction motor, which is mounted at the near-side rear above the axle casing, drives the bevel-pinion shaft by a duplex roller chain running in an oil bath. Correct chain tension is automatically maintained. A .fourspeed controller is fitted and the claim is made that the get-away, both forward and in reverse, is unusually smooth.

Incorporated in the design is a number of features which make for personal safety and protect the electrical equipment. These comprise an interlock on the hand brake which prevents the current from flowing until the hand brake is released and, as is common practice, the tiller must be-in the travel position before the vehicle can be moved off.

A Safety Switch

An overriding safeguard is a keyoperated switch in the end of the tiller arm. It works in the same way as an ignition switch and should prevent unauthorized use of the vehicle.

All wheels are braked, the 7-in.

drums having two-leading-shoe equipment with Lockheed hydraulic actuation. A central position is adopted for mounting the battery, the capacity of the standard unit being 108 amp.hrs.: the working voltage is 24.

On the dairy model, which is the one to be exhibited, the body is of all-steel construction, and consists of four corner uprights on which is mounted a domed roof. Both the sides and the rear are left open, whilst the front is partially covered. Provision is, however, made for several optional arrangements, such as a fixed back panel, sliding side panels and so on.

At each end of the roof weatherproof locker space is provided. Access to the battery is gained through a removable trap in the centre of the floor, whilst full access to the whole chassis can be obtained by raising the forward end of the body, which is binged at the rear.

Not the least interesting feature of this newcomer to the MorrisonElectricar range will be its selling price which, it is undetstood, will offer quite

a40 exceptional value for a vehicle of its type and capacity.

The new 30-cwt. model will be made in three types, to be known respectively as the S.D.30 (short deck), M.D.30 (medium deck) and L.D.30 (long deck). The S.D.30 and M.D.30 will have chassis of similar wheelbase, • but the L.D.30 will be somewhat longer, being designed particularly as the basis for mobile shops. _ The model .to be exhibited at the Dairy Show will be the S.D.30, but the chassis specification applies generally to the three models.

The layout is conventional, in that the traction motor is mounted in line with the chassis members and drives a double-reduction rear axle through a Layrub-jointed propeller shaft.

It will be shown with a dairy-type body with open sides and a low entrance full-width cab.

The address of the maker is 95-99, Ladbroke Grove, London, W.11.
