shortages through a government-backed scheme that cuts the cost of HGV training by 40%. South Yorkshire Transport Brokerage (SYTB) will be launched tomorrow (18 November) by local MP and Financial Secretary to the Treasury John Healey.
The scheme follows research among 300 companies that suggests the county needs at least 1,000 extra drivers. Many operators no longer bother to advertise vacancies because shortages are so acute. SYTB boss Mike Smith says it is designed for firms with fewer than 250 people that want to develop the skills of their existing staff. "It normally costs about 21,000 to train somebody with a Class C licence to drive artics or drawbar trailers," he adds. "We're saying it can be done for M00."
