been victorious in its 30-year battle to win a vital road upgrade, thanks to a novel method of highlighting its problems to politicians.

Mallaig-based Milligan Transport took the unusual step of driving Scottish Transport Minister Tavish Scott down the A830 trunk road in an artic to illustrate how bad the road is.

Director Greg Milligan explains: "This improvement is long overdue. Using the road in the summer months is a nightmare when all the tourist traffic is heading down the road. Our drivers are having to reverse a 40ft artic back down a single-track road because car drivers coming the other way are unable, or incapable, of reversing their cars hack to the nearest passing place."

Now Scott has announced the widening of the last section of single-track road to a two-lane carriageway between Arisaig and Loch Nan Ijamh. As well as improving access to Mallaig, the work may also provide a shorter route to Skye via the CalMac ferry service from the port.
