How would you like to see the future? And, apart from knowing the result of the 3.30 at Haydock Park, what's the point? Some people are able to see the future and to change it—designers, whose ideas (if they're lucky) get turned into metal and plastic.

In our second annual design competition for students of Coventry University's Transport Design course, CM and Iveco Ford set some of Britain's brightest vehicle designers the task of imagining the next generation of trucks Coventry offers the only undergraduate Transport Design course in the country, and its graduates have joined the design studios of many of the world's car companies. But they don't just style the fanciful concept cars you see at the Motor Show they design everything from motorbikes to monorails, and show a working knowledge of engineering, ergonomics, marketing and materials science

For our competition second-year students were asked to create a replacement for one of three current lveco models. the 3.5-tonne TurboDaily Van; the 17-tonne SuperCargo distribution truck, or

the 38-tonne EuroTech long-ha tractive unit. They we encouraged to be as imoginati as possible, within the limitations conventional powerplant size an legal requirements They also h to conduct aerodynamic tests show the feasibility of their bo designs.

With such a broad brie assessing the design proposals w no easy job Our guest judge Merrick Taylor of Motor Panels a Jim Mason of IAD, know as mu as anyone in Britain about t process of taking a design fro drawing-board sketches to t haulier's yard. They we impressed by the quality a quantity of work on display, and the effort that went into researchi and developing our winni entries.

We came up with a clear winn from the 17-tonne catego although the 3.5-tonne section h too few entries to produce credible winner. But the 38-tonn were tricky with four excel! contenders In the end one en came across as the m imaginative and complete—a tr transport solution. But judging the quality of their work, all finalists deserve a bright future vehicle design.
