"UNLESS the present-day total of 570,000 railway staff is reduced by 10-12 per cent, in the next 15 years, we cannot hope to revitalize the railways and make them an economic proposition." This was stated by Mr. W. P. Allen, manpower adviser to the British Transport Commission, speaking at the General Federation of Trade Unions' conference at Blackpool on Monday.
Workers will be made redundant, he said, by modernization schemes.
