How a Total Weight of Over 500 Tons of Machinery Was Removed Within Contract Time and Without Mishap.

THE FIRST portion of an unusual transport feat has just been carried out by the Skipton Transport Co., of Skipton, by the removal of the contents of a cotton factory to Keighley for storage while a new mill is being built. When the new mill is completed the greater portion of the machines removed will be returned to Skipton. The completion of a tenancy agreement compelled Messrs. Rose, Hewitt and Co., cotton manufacturers, to vacate their premises at Broughton Road Shed, Skipton, and, as it was impossible to find suitable accommodation in time, the whole of their 500 looms and the subsidiary plant used for dressing, winding, and other processes, had to be got away. Accommodation, oven to store such a large quantity of machinery is not. easy to find, but a.large room at Walk Mill, Keighley, was placed-at the disposal of the owners of the machinery, and the transfer of the contents ef the mill was

entrusted to the Skipton Transport Co. For the performance of this big undertaking two lorries, one a Thornycroft and the other a Leyland, were used, and seven journeys per day were made. Facilities for loading and unloading were made at both ends, and the journeys were carried out with such regularity that the time of the arrival of the lorries could be fixed to a very few minutes for each journey, although the two places are ten miles apart and the road is not, of the best. The loads varied considerably, in view of the varied sizes of the looms, some of which were of narrow

width, while others v,ere for pieces 72 ins, wide. The loom accessories were very numerous also, and the total weight carried was estimated at over 500 tons. The work of removal was Completed well under the arranged time, and there was never a broken journey on account of mechanical mishap. Messrs. Rose, Hewitt and Co. hope to have the new weaving shed completed by autumn, and it is the intention that the looms shall be returned to Skipten then. The accompanying pictures show the Leyland and Thornycroft lorries which were used, with typical loads'.
