'Don't take the cheap option'

Operators are being warned against cut-price tacho analysis optionstheir use MI be vieweo with "suspicion" at any public inquiries relating to tacho infringements.

The warning comes from North-East Traffic Commissioner Tom Macartney. Writing in the TCs' Annual Report, he says he has discovered that there are a "number of tacho analysis agencies operating a two-tier service for the industry'. Lower-cost options often fail to seek out missing mileage or excess speed.

Macartney says failure to carry out full analysis of tacho charts "should not be countenanced by any reputable firm'.

"Failure to carry out a full analysis is akin to ignoring the braking system of vehicles," he adds. He alleges that some firms are resisting full analysis being carried out because this allows them to plead ignorance when they are caught.
