ABOUT 1,000 waste collection drivers have accepted a £2.60-anhour increase in wages ahead of next week's introduction of the 48hour working week.

The deal with Biffa Waste Services will increase their weekly pay from £425 to 1438.90 despite working seven fewer hours a week.

Transport & General Workers Union regional industrial organiser Maurice Britton says the agreement points the way forward for other companies: "Drivers will move towards companies like Biffa and force companies that haven't increased rates to start increasing them."

The deal takes hourly rates to £8.80 but involves some consolidation of bonuses. Members of the GMB union and the United Road Transport Union have accepted the same package. A spokesman for Biffa says: "The increase reflects a consolidation of bonus and overtime and takes into account the reduction of working hours as a result of the WorkingTime Directive.

Last year, the drivers were offered a 36% increase in pay but Britton says they felt there were too many strings attached to this deal they eventually opted for a 3% rise instead.
