The permitted gross and axle weights of vehicles used under the Order depend on which one of three vehicle categories is chosen for the movement. Each category has its own weight limits and axle-spacing requirements and they are given in the tables below.
No minimum weights are provided for any category so a vehicle weighing, say, 70 tonnes could be used under category 2 or, if higher axle weights but lower speed were preferred, under category 3. Whilst drawbar tractors used for pulling or pushing loadcarrying vehicles come within a category, only the weight of the vehicle or vehicles carrying the load is used to determine the appropriate category. The axle, bogie and gross weight limits of a category do not apply to drawbar tractors.
A sign indicating which category a vehicle is being used under must be fitted in a clearly visible position at the front of the vehicle or drawing vehicle. The vehicle must comply with the conditions relating to the category specified on the sign.
