ATTEMPTS by the Greater London Council's Greater London Enterprise Board to take over the manufacture of Ward Dalesman bus and coach chassis from the defunct Ward Motors company near Huddersfield could be jeopardised by the lack of detailed drawings of the products. NOEL MILLIER reports.

GLEB is interested in establishing bus and coach chassis production as part of the GLC's long-term aim to create more jobs in London. It is also looking at the possibility of assembling other types of bus chassis, especially if London Transport wants any.

Darlington Transport, the only operator of the Ward GRXI rearengined single-deck bus, is very pleased with the type's performance in service and wishes to increase its fleet by around six vehicles a year for the next few years.

It will order the chassis from any organisation that can supply them subject to the specification and price remaining suitable.

It is also conducting a feasibility study looking at the possibility of building the chassis itself in its own maintenance workshops.

It is possible that it could build for its own requirements without dramatically increasing its workforce or costs, and it would be able to schedule production throughout the year to avoid the problems creating by taking delivery of vehicles in batches.

Darlington is not interested or able to get involved in the production of chassis other than to meet its own requirements.
