Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MITE increase in motor taxation, I which has been voted in the French budget, severely hits commercial transport. This, says our Paris correspondent, is no accident; it is a deliberate policy adopted by the Government at the instigation of the railways.

In the case of individuals or firms possessing more than two goods vehicles, the ordinary horse-power tax has been increased by 50 per cent. A new weight tax is being imposed, in addition to the horse-power tax on all industrial vehicles and the tax is extended to trailers.

056 The vehicle taxation schedule is as follows :-5-7 tons, 400 francs; 7-10 tons, 600 francs; 10-13 tons, 900 francs; above 13 tons, 1,200 francs. Trailers under 10 cwt., 100 francs; 10 cwt-2 tons, 200 francs; above 2 tons, 400 francs.

Another new tax voted deals with road space occupied. Vehicles occupying 10-15 square metres pay 600 francs ; 15-20 square metres, 800 franca; above 20 square metres, 1,000 francs.

The ordinary turnover tax levied on all French business concerns, whether their turnover results in a profit or a

loss, is increased by 2 per cent. in the case of those engaged in commercial transport.

The French commercial-vehicle user will also have to pay his share of the increased indirect taxation. The tax on petrol, benzole and oils has been increased, and incidentally the compression-ignition engine has not been ,forgotten, a special tax of 36 francs per quintal being imposed on gas oil.

Finally, the half-tax allowance on the ordinary horse-power rating, in the case of vehicles over nine years old, is suppressed.
