ADSL Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line: the typical broadband connection via a phone line. Ethernet the standard system of wiring and connection for computer networks. See also 'Structured Cabling'.
IP Internet Protocol: the standard by which digital (packet-switched) data is sent across the internet and within a computer network, ISDN Integrated Services Digital Network: a digital connection used to provide voice and data connections ;nto a premises; now often superseded by ADSL.
ISP Internet Service Provider: a firm which provides access to the internet. typically via a broadband (ADSL or cable) connection.
ITSP Internet Telephone Service Provider: a firm which provides Internet services specifically for making VolP telephone calls.
PBX Private Branch eXchange (or PABX Private Automatic Branch eXchange): a telephone exchange which serves a particular site or business. PSTN Public Switched Telephone Network: the standard telephone network, connecting to landline and mobile phones. Also known as 'POTS' (Plain Old Telephone System).
CloS Quality of Service: the suitability of an internet connection (eg: an ADSL broadband line) for a specific service such as VolP.
SIP Session Initiation Protocol: a standard for connecting devices such as PBXs and VolP phones to each other and to computers and servers. SIP Trunk a virtual phone line connecting a PBX via a data network to the public telephone network.
Structured Cabling the physical network of IF and telephone connections within a building, usually using 'Cat 5' or 'Cat 6' cable and RJ45 connections. VolP -Voice over Internet Protocol a system which allows voice calls to be made over the internet or over a standard (IP-based) computer network. Also called IF Telephony or 'Internet Telephony'.
