WEST BERKSHIRE Council says it has handed out over £10,000 worth of fines after a 15-month blitz on operators breaching weight restrictions in the county.
Cases have been brought against 41 operators since its campaign began in December 2002. Councillor Sally Hannon, portfolio holder for highways and transportation, says:" It is accepted that freight has to move around
and those that move it provide an important service. However, lorry drivers who breach weight restrictions can cause significant damage to people's living environment as well as structural damage to bridges and roads. They can also present a safety risk.
"We urge all drivers to take note of the weight restriction signs and to use more appropriate alternative routes."
