TRANSPORT chiefs in Glas gow are spending thousand of pounds to protect bu drivers by equipping 100 buse with vandal-proof screen: round the cabins.

The move is the latest in th, wake of attacks on driver which have included razo slashings. This has promptel crews to impose curfews oi some of the city's housim schemes.

An official of the Greater Glasgow Passenger Transport Executive said: "The cost of the screens is about £50 a bus, plus labour costs for fitting them. We can make the screens ourselves at our Larkfield works, but speed is essential and it may therefore be decided to buy some, or all, from a firm in England.

"Our primary concern is to get them fitted to the 100 buses as quickly as possible." He said that the polycarbonate screen was sprayed to make it crack resistant.
