TWO years ago, French builders of commercial bodywork, through the Groupement Synclical; .decided to hold an .annual Concours .d'Elegance et do Confort for coaches: The first event was an immediate .success, and in this year's Concours, which was held. last week at Nice, 47 entries were received. French, Italian, Swiss, .Belgian and British bodywork was represented. A Maudslay Marathon 111 coach with 31-seater body by James Whitson and Co., Ltd., gained the Officiel des Transporteurs Cup.

In this contest, external appearance counts for much and marks are awarded for interior decoration and finish, ,but emphasis is laid on practical comfort for passengers. The driver also is not forgotten. He must be provided with all-round visibility, comfortable seating, a well-laid-out and illuminated instrument board, and all controls must be easily accessible.

One of the special points noted by the jury in making. the awards was the arrangement of emergency exits.
