Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE need for exports into the dollar countries is so imperative that this is not merely a question of patriotism; it is a matter of selfpreservation. Unless we can substantially increaSe our trade with the dollar countries in the short time that is at our disposal during which Marshall Aid will, we hope, continue, we shall be unable to procure some of the most important raw materials to maintain our economy."

Sir Graham Cunningham, K.B.E., chairman of the Dollar Export Board, made this statement on Monday in explaining the Board's work.

He said that the Board was being formed into a company limited by guarantee, and was sponsored entirely by British industry, commerce, finance and organized labour. Some services would, however, be rendered by the Government.

The Board expects to be particidarly well placed for securing the urgent examination of any reasonable and practicable proposal, where obstacles can be removed by Government action. In addition, it intends to promote new activities in the Canadian and American markets, to make suggestions as to methods of marketing, and to examine fresh ways of earning dollars.

It will also be able to ascertain whether new facilities and aids for exporters can usefully be provided by the Government. by co-operative action in industry or by financial agencies. It will examine the possible advantages of new forms of sales promotion and fresh ventures in market research. Wherever possible, work will be done through existing organizations, and approaches will be made to industries through their respective groups.

Sir Graham Cunningham is chairman and managing director of Triplex Safety Glass Co., Ltd., and associated companies.
