refuse collector has been used for some time in the City of Gloucester as a horse-drawn appliance for collection and as tractor-drawn equipment when fully loaded. A feature of the collector is the use of aluminium panels which have been specifically developed for the purpose in question and have high corrosion-resistant properties. The trailers are manufactured by The Eagle' Engineering Co., Ltd., Warwick, which co-operated with the Northern Aluminium Co., Ltd., Banbury, in the corrosion tests of the Tpanels.

The chassis is constructed of light pressed-steel sections and there is a steel-channel sub-frame. The aluminium plates comprise panels of Noral M57S alloy, and sections are constructed of Noral 51SW and Noral 51ST. The floor is made of Tag-in. plate and is supported on 2-in, by

channel cross-members. • The sides and front have 12-gauge plates, stiffened with 2-in, angles top and bottom, and braced by vertical members, The tailboard is hinged at the top and is fitted with camoperated fasteners at the bottom. The apex of the body is framed with extruded sections to give adequate support to the covers.

The power-operated hydraulic tipping gear comprises a telescopic ram at the front, and the pump, power-take-off, drive and oil-tank are mounted on the BedfOrd-Scaminell tractive unit. A selfsealing, quick-operating coupling is

provided. The cover-lids are handlever operated and spring balanced Girling brakes are fitted to the trailer axle and are operated from the tractor. There is also a parking lever at the front of the vehicle. The body is 11 ft. 10 ins. long. 7 ft. wide, 1 ft. 9.ins, deep, and has a 1-ft. 9-in. crown. The weight of the trailer is 1 ton 14 cwt.
