S1MPLE in conception and essentially practical in use, is an apt summing up of a new type of refuse-collecting vehicle evolved by the Borough of Bermondsey, and developed by Mr. J. E. Peters, Enid Garage, Enid Street, London. S.E.16. The Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd., Warwick, was responsible for the body and general inStallation.

The main feature in the design is the use of 4 hydraulic hoist, mounted_ between the cab and the body, which is employed to raise the filled refuse bins to a height convenient for easy dumping into the fore part of the body. The bins concerned are of the type used for collecting refuse from large blocks of flats and weigh. when full. about 8 cwt.

When the bin has been raised and swung over the open end of the body. it can be easily tipped manually; when the fore part of the body is full, the body is tipped to transfer the load to the rear. Alternatively, loading can be carried out manually at the rear, where sliding covers are also provided.

The hoist is mounted on two channelsteel members which, in turn, are bolted to the vehicle frame. The height of the swinging head is such that it can be swung full-circle, so that the body can be loaded from each side.

The fulcrum pins of the hoist are ingeniously mounted in a slotted-link anchorage, an arrangement which not only allows the lifting arm to lie in a horizontal position when travelling, but considerably reduces the are of lift when in operation.

Control is from the cab through a two-way control valve and a selector lever. When the lever is in one position, operation of the valve causes the hoist to function, and when it is moved to the second position the valve will cause the body to tip.

It might be thought that the introduction of the hoist would mean fitting a body of a capacity smaller than normal. This is not so, however, as the l2-cubicyd. container has been mounted so as to give a degree of overhang, the extent of which does not interfere with tipping. The rear door. which is hinged from the top, is provided with a remote

control, the release lever being mounted in a forward position, on the near side. To reduce the manual effort required to swing the hoist when loaded, the ram barrel housing is mounted on Timken roller bearings at the bottom, and ball bearings, for steadying purposes, at the top.

Mr. A, Pool, transport manager of Bermondsey Borough Council, stressed the point that no part of the hoist assembly called for lubrication, and as there were no working links, pulley.s or cables, the assembly should call for negligible maintenance. The prototype equipment inipeeted by " The Commercial Motor," was shown mounted on a Bedford chassis,

The aluminium alloys were chossen as the result of tests made by The Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd., over a period of

13 months, A piece' of Noral M57S sheet was riveted to a steel plate and placed in a galyanized-iron domestic refuse-bin.

In addition, two pieces of Noral 3S sheet were riveted together and suspended in a water-closet. Subsequent examinations proved that both alloys have a high intrinsic resistance to corrosion, but that the effects of crevice action and bimetallic contact considerably reduce resistance. The bodies, therefore, must be carefully designed to eliminate or reduce these undesirable features.
