The GKN Transmissions SubGroup, of the giant GKN Engineering complex, announces a f3-im. expansion plan for their Birmingham —based Salisbury Axle Plant.

Originally the premises of Salisbury Transmission Limited—now a subsidiary of GKN Transmissions SubGroup—consisted of two factories at Witton. A third production factory for Axles and Differentials was recently commissioned at Old Bromford Lane, Ward End. As part of the £31m. expansion scheme a fourth factory has been required and is located in Tyburn Road, Erdington.

The major proportion of this new capital is allocated to the high precision gear cutting plant and supporting equipment, including new heat treatment facilities.

The two factories at Witton are planned for re-organisation into the main machine shops for the manufacture of the precision parts and will provide for all types of axles and differential units. Precision parts produced at Witton will feed the assembly lines at the Old Bromford Lane and Tyburn Road factories.

The announcement of this major expansion plan will be welcome news to the Automotive, the Dumper and Allied Industries.

A new Axle and Differential design for dumper truck application is in an advanced stage of development at the Transmissions Sub-Group Central Research and Development Laboratories, located at Kingsbury Road, Erdington. This new design foresees a wider use of precision forged gears that will be manufactured using the new BLW hot forging process at the forges of the GKN Forgings SubGroup.
