• The self-loading Hub o Trackliner, already well established in Britain for the transport of bricks, has been adapted for the first time in this country for delivery of land drainage pipes.

On July 2, two Trackliners manufactured by Hub o (GB) Ltd were delivered to Woodcocks Transport (Midlands) Ltd, of Swadlincote, Burton-on-Trent, for the transport of pipes.

Woodcocks' managing director, Mr T. A. Fisher, says: "We are always ready to consider investing in special vehicles to meet our customers' requirements, and in this case the Hub o Trackliner has proved an admirable solution to a particular need. Our trials have indicated an increase of about 75 per cent in tonnage delivered per driver per day,"

Much of this increase is due to the self-loading operation of the electrically operated Hub o gantry crane and gripper, which enables the driver, working single-handed, to load or unload his 15-ton load in about 50min, as compared with over 3hr for a manual operation by a team of men on a load of similar size. The work to be done by the Trackliners was previously carried out by smaller conventional vehicles carrying a load of about 8 tons. The bigger load makes a further contribution to efficiency without raising the problem of negotiating restricted sites, as the unique self-steering action of the Trackliner's rear bogie enables it to manoeuvre in spaces which are impassable for conventional artics, or even for rigids of much smaller size.
