THE California Motor Vehicle Pollution Control Board has given its final approval to four devices designed to reduce exhaust fumes.
It will be mandatory to fit such a device to vehicles sold in California from 1966.
The devices approved were submitted by American Machine and Foundry Co. and Chromalloy Corp. jointly; Arvin Industries Inc. and Universal Oil Products Co.; W. R. Grace and Co. and NorrisThermador Corp.: and Walker Manufac

turing Co., a subsidiary Of Kern County Land Co., and American Cyanamid Co. The American Machine Chromalloy device, which is also approved for used vehicles, is called an afterburner and eliminates exhaust fumes by burning them at extremely high temperatures. The. three other devices work on a catalyst principle., chemically oxidizing the fumes to reduce pollutants.
The manufacturers estimate the initial cost of the devices will range from about £18 to £43 installed,
