Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The New Model 428 A.E.C. Chassis for 4-ton Loads and the Novel Arrangement of Cab.

SATE are able in this issue to give this short description of two new A.E.C. chassis which have recently been evolved as the butcome of the experience that has been gained with the "model 508" short-wheelbase chassis which was designed. to carry loads up to 6 tons. The new model is known as the

428," and in respect of most of its components it is identical with the Model 418, which is a 3i-ton chassis with the driving position behind the dashboard in the orthodox manner. The new model, namely, the "428" chassis, has the driving position forward on the right-hand side of the engine, and, with a wheelbase of 10 ft. 6 ins, and a turning circle of 41 ft., it has a net load capacity of four tons. Still further to reduce the length, the starting handle is made to fold back, as can be seen in one of the photographs which accompany this article.

The engine is the 85-50 h.p. four-cylindered matt, driving through 'an inverted cone clutch lined with Ferodo and a coition shaft with Spicer joints to a four-speed, spur-type gearbox and thence by overhead worm drive to the rear axle.

The novel feature about the vehicle is the cab, the whole of which above the level of the driver's seatback—that is to say, nearly one-half of the total structure—is hinged so that it can be folded back over the chassis, the shape of the canopy allowing it to fall within the sides of the low-sided body. With the cab folded back in this position and with the sides of the body removed (the top being hinged at the rear end), not only is access given to the engine, but the engine can be lifted out with great ease and rapidity for overhauling.

The standard tyre eouipment consists of solid tyres, but we understiand that pneumatic tyres can be supplied at extra cost.

The overall length of the vehicle is 18 ft. 10i ins. and the body space provided is 14 ft. 6 ins., the height of the frame from the ground being 2 ft. 74 ins. The chassis weight is 21 tons and the price of the chassis, without its driver's cab and equipped with solid tyres, is n3o.
