In a new series, Commercial Motor will be selecting a 'truck of the month' from a used truck dealership.

It's a chance for you to put forward any vehicle from your forecourt — Hanbury Riverside is the first to take part with a Daf XF95 Space Cab.

Our first truck of the month is a Daf XF95 from Hanbury Riverside. It's one of a number brought in by Lee Smith in a fleet acquisition deal. Finance is available from the dealer, including a low-deposit deal and deferred VAT payment, subject to status.

There's no better way to kick off this new section than with a vehicle that has been short supply in the past 18 months on the used market. It comes with an analogue tachograph and is LEZ-compliant.With Transport for London's Freight Plan announced last week this has become a major selling point for operators in the Home Counties.

The Euro-3 driveline carries a three-month warranty from Hanbury Riverside; priced at £35,000 (ex-VAT) it comes with six months' VED and a full service history from a franchised dealer.

Its Space Cab spec features a walnut-dash finish, air-con and cruise control. On the outside there's a mid-lift/steer axle and a sliding fifth wheel.

The Daf XF95 has been around in varying guises since 1996; it was replaced by the XF105 in 2005.

A driver's delight doesn't equate to a gaffer's motor but in this case the truck fits both bills. The driver gets excellent living room with either the Space Cab or Super Space Cab as well as traditional four-over-four manual transmission and smooth handling.

The boss gets strong residuals — this is one of the few trucks to rival Scania and Volvo when it comes to holding its price (and it's a seller's market at the moment so that reputation can only be enhanced, along with the prices paid for used examples).

It's debatable whether Daf stuck with the basic XF95 design past its sell-by date, or whether it stayed too close to home with the XFI05. In either case, by the time the 95 was replaced it had started to look aged compared with its revamped contemporaries.

But CM has put a couple of XF95s through their paces since the turn of the century and the general opinion remains positive with fuel economy always tending to beat the industry average over our arduous Scottish test route. •
