kN OPERATOR has had two vehicles suspended rom its licence for three weeks after ignoring Vosa cquests for a maintenance investigation and racking p 19 prohibitions in five years.

Manchester-based chemical carrier A Barry & Sons, Thich holds a licence for nine vehicles and two trailrs, was called before North Western Deputy Traffic 7ommissioner Patrick Ivlulvenna. The firm has been perating for 45 years.

Vehicle examiner Martin Garlick said he carried ut a maintenance investigation in June 2006, folming the issue of an S-marked prohibition. Three chides were inspected and two issued with delayed rohibitions. Mileages were missing from a number of le inspection sheets.

In the past five years,10 immediate and nine delayed rohibitions had been issued, including a second -marked prohibition. Garlick attempted a further taintenance investigation in May 2007 without success.Appointment letters were not acknowledged: when he visited the yard it was locked and appeared derelict. Garlick agreed that if the recommendations made by a transport consultant were followed, the company should get things right.

Director Kevin Andrew Barry said his father was his transport manager. But his mother had become ill, as a result of which he had taken on too much and had not seen the appointment letters.

As the vehicles carried chemicals, he felt they were vulnerable in the yard, so they had been moved to the customer's premises. An application was being made for those premises to be an additional operating centre.The two oldest vehicles, one of which had been responsible for a number of the prohibitions, had been replaced. Barry was seeking his own CPC and either he or his wife would replace his father as transport manager. He understood things had to change and that the company could not be run as it had been.
