Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

EIGHT ILLEGAL immigrants were arrested last week after they were seen jumping from the back of a truck delivering windscreen glass in Nottingham.

The driver of the German vehicle was initially arrested as well, but later released. Two of the eight illegals were children and are being cared for by social services, while the other six have been placed in detention centres. All eight are making claims for asylum.

An Immigration Service official says the arrests should have no consequences for the company to which the windscreens were being delivered. According to local press reports, witnesses say they saw up to 15 individuals getting out of the truck in Rennie Hogg Road, near the Riverside retail park at just after 4am and running away, so it is probable that some have escaped.

The number of such entries into the UK is falling, according to the Immigration Service, which says it stopped 17,000 people illegally crossing the Channel in 2006.

A spokesman says: Our deployment of state-of-the-art detection technology, levying civil penalties on hauliers, and closer co-operation with carriers, port authorities and EU counterparts are clamping down on clandestine entry into the UK.'

• Four stowaways from Afghanistan were discovered in the back of a truck delivering potatoes to the AB Produce factory in Measham, Leicestershire. Three adults have been arrested and a child has been taken into care.
