Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Having read and fumed at various comments over the years regarding drivers' hours and speed limiters, the final straw which prompted me to write were the comments by Mary Williams regarding managers blatantly encouraging drivers to break the law.

I have been involved in transport for 35 years, the last 20 of them as my own boss and an employer, and I can assure her that speed limiter abuse is most frequently instigated by drivers because there seems to be an inbuilt mentality that wants to prevent them from being overtaken.

Even when the limiter is disabled, the driver is happy to proceed at 90mph, until, that is, someone is going a little quicker, then as this "speeder" comes alongside he finds it not possible to pass as the other driver (for want of a better word) has now increased his speed as a counter measure. think this is probably their idee of "one-upmanship".

Manufacturers (some mor than others) must hold a lot of blame for this and tachograph abuse as they make it possible to disable either, so drivers ca often just remove a fuse without resorting to any "devices", or even just turn back the ignition key. Have these manufacturers not realised that this is the major cause of the increase in alternator failures?

The easiest way to out dow on tachograph abuse in my opinion would be for the DoT t( request a random (DoT's choice) month's discs be produced with the vehicle whe presenting it for MoT. lam sum a cursory check on 30 discs could show if a haulier was trying to make an effort to run legally. I am sure none of us do completely but there are SOME who don't even try.

Name and address withheld. PS Regarding your "blowing the whistle" article, I wonder what M, Bell would do were she presente with a list of registration number: and dates of vehicles obviously running without a speed limiter?
