The case arose from an accident at West Boldon when a 2,500-gal. tanker overturned and 1.000 gal, of petrol escaped.

Mr. R. Heron, prosecuting, said that main-road traffic had to be diverted for over four hours, and the -fire brigade used 50 gal. of foam costing £93. It was found that valves which would have prevented some of the petrol from escaping were not fitted.

Mr. H. V. C. Funnell, defending, stated that the attention of the company's vehicle inspectors had been drawn to the necessity of ensuring that pressure valves were in position at all times, but human error did occur.

Since the accident, which happened when the driver swerved to avoid a dog and ran up a hank, instructions had been given for comprehensive checks to be made of all tanker ventilator components.
