HIRE-AND-REWARD drivers n the East Midlands will be £2/hr worse off than their counterparts .n the West Midlands following a leW pay agreement.

The East Midlands joint indus, rial council (JIC) has raised minimum rates for Class 1 drivers by 2.8p to £6.28/hour for a 40-hour week from 1 April.

This compares with a 55p increase to 5.8.30-an-hour that was awarded last month by West Midlands JIC (CM 13 January).

But Rod Devenish, senior area manager for the Road Haulage Association, says a further meeting of the East Midlands JIC is scheduled for September to consider the implications of the WorkingTime Directive. "The unions wanted to take it into consideration this time but I don't think you can until it starts and you know how it is going to work," Devenish explains. "At the meeting in September we will listen to each other's opinions and decide on a possible pay structure for 2006."

C Butt. a Northampton-based haulier employing 400 drivers, takes part in the JIC negotiations and will apply the latest agreement throughout its eight depots. But MD Clive Hodgkinson says: "It is getting more and more challenging because the majority of drivers are salaried, not hourly paid."

This means companies have to decide on an average number of hours worked each week before applying any increase.
