'HOUSANDS OF truckloads rf food coming through Dover re reaching supermarket helves without any legal safety hecks, according to the Food .tandards Agency.

The FSA's Report on the Food ,aw Enforcement Service reveals hat Dover District Council is rutting the public at risk.

Only 10 checks were carried rut on more than 10,000 HGVs oming through Dover and the 7.hannel Tunnel between 2001 .nd 2002.

One container contained a onsignment of tomato paste hat was said to have a bestrefore date in 1983. On another rccasion a container of Turkish ruts, which was subject to a warn ing about possible toxic content, passed through the tunnel without being examined.

Jason Williams, traffic manager at Kent-based TLC European, says: "We are regularly stopped by Customs but have never been stopped by the FSA, even though we bring everything from frozen vegetables to yoghurts into the UK," he says.

"We would not have any problem with our vehicles being checked you don't know what you're eating these days."

Dover District Council has accepted the FSA report, which was made following an audit in 2003. Linda G °lightly, chief environmental health officer, says: "Most of the food entering Dover has come from other European countries and is not of a high-risk category.

"We are confident that we have not put the public in danger and we are fully co-operating with the FSA implementing all their proposals."
