Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Overall pre-tax profits of the leading companies in road haulage have declined over the past three years, according to a new industry report.

Business Ratio—Road Hauliers, published by Sauter Direct marketing, examines the performance of 153 leading UK haulage firms. It shows a fall in pre-tax profits from 3.3% in 1996/97 to 2.8% in 1998/99.

Sales are reported to have outstripped profits by around three times: on average sales increased during the threeyear period by 32.2% and prof its by a more modest 11.7%. Schoher confirms this is a trend seen under "difficult trading conditions". The report also shows that companies are "broadening out' with services such as warehousing and stock control helping them to maintain their operating margins.

Top performing companies by turnover in 1998/99 were NFC, Tibbett& Britten Group and Christian Salvesen.
